TROOP COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES

October 11 , 2004

Present:  Steve Wiberg, Dave Puskala, Steve Lindlof, Scott Betlach, Kelvin Vartti, Jim Greene, Dennis Lindike, Mike Checky, Paul Hoff, Linda Christensen, John Yarusso,  Wyeth Lewis, Bob Leibel

 

PLC Report:  Nick Lindike reported that the next 3 meetings will have an orienteering theme. 

Two adults are needed to ask questions related to orienteering (age appropriate).  The boys need to answer the question before they are admitted to the meeting.  Dave and Linda volunteered to ask the questions.

n        10/18 - 4 stations.  Dave – , Dan orienteering, Eric – nighttime directions, Mike – how to determine the height of a object. Bull Moose will do flags.

n        10/25 – Pace check pre-opening.  – Dennis will bring a measuring wheel and assist with the pre-opening.  Raven patrol will do flags.  Each patrol will set up orienteering course.

n        11/1 -  (Nick will give Ian Harding a call to see if he can come to a Troop meeting to talk about orienteering)  (orienteering Minn.org)

 

Roundtable Report:   Steve, Linda, Mike and others attended 

n        FOS will be for November. 

n        Talked about join scouting, ~180 new scouts joined this year, but the goal was 350 so they were down from what they expected.  Manitou district youth increased by 1.5% so they would like cub scouts double their recruiting.   

n        Troop Committee challenge was last Saturday, 10/9. 

n        University of scouting sign up is coming up. 

n        Troop 112 is selling popcorn to send to Iraq. 

n        Breakout talked about NYLT (national youth training – replaces JLTC – good for 13/14 year olds.)   

n        $195 for Silver Pathfinder, next summer. 

n        There are openings for adult staff for Silver Pathfinder next summer.

n        Boy Scout Day at Trollhaugen – Sunday Feb 6.  (Add to newsletter – need to sign up by Feb 1.)  Also on Dec 12, March 6 and March 12.  ($13)

n        Mike / Wyeth suggest that all of the Troop Committee should attend the “Recommend Troop Committee Challenge”

n        Steve recommended that more of the 433 adults should attend Roundtable.  Each person who attends Roundtable gains valuable information that will benefit the Troop.

Next newsletter will be in December.

 

Calendar

The Troop 433 yearly calendar is over due at the district office.  Dennis indicated that the calendar will be sent in on 10/12.  Wyeth suggested that we make the following year calendar earlier so it will be ready by the September Roundtable.  The Troop should plan on having a calendar planning meeting possibly the week after we return Tomahawk.

Scoutmaster Report: 

 

Outings / Trip Reports:

n        Brule River outing – 9/24-9/26  -- Good weather and everybody had a good time.  Boy leadership was attempted but the weekend patrol leader probably could of used some additional training to be more effective. 

n        Hiking merit badge – Depending on the weather the trip may not be overnight trip.  Plan on leaving St Jude at 9 am Saturday, 13 scouts.  ~ 4 adults.

n        Astronomy merit badge -  8 out of the 11 scouts will attend a star watching session to finish up the merit badge on 10/16. 

n        Fred C. Anderson – Shelter C – Cost $50 to reserve the shelter -  plus $1.50 per person to cover taxes / insurance. 

n        Okpik  -- Feb 19-21.  Leave Friday morning – Check in on Friday Night.  Cost ~$80 per scout.  

·         Mike suggested spearhead (at Tomahawk)– but there was concerns about the lack of snow.  Okpik now has opened up the cabin stay program.  – Mike also suggested Wiga wabgen. 

·         Jim Greene will get the Okpik info to give to the boys to take home.  Linda will bring a poster board to showing Okpik.  There was some discussion about needing to leave for Okpik Friday morning to take the kids out of school on Friday.  If we plan earlier enough and indicate to any concerned parents that this is a learning experience.  Jim Green will make reservations for 12 as soon as possible.

n        There was some discussion about having a camping outing in January.  Cannon River was suggested as a good winter camping outing.  We could also use this outing as a merit badge outing.

 

Den Chiefs – Need den chiefs for the two Webelos 2 and three Webelos 1 dens.  – The Den Chiefs would need to be at the patrols meetings – The Troop need to define the requirements (guidelines) for the Den chiefs.  The Webelos adult leaders need to be trained with the Boys.  “Den Chief for two” training.  Need a Webelos transition coordinator, Scott Betlach had been the coordinator in the past.

Treasurer’s Report:    Balance  $2677.19 – Okpik will cost $600 to start.  Tomahawk checks from the Tomahawk bills are slowly trickling in.

 

Pancake Breakfast:

n        A meeting will need to be called to discuss the St Jude pancake breakfast.

 

Advancement:

-- Carl has three benches to install.  He just needs to figure out where the benches go.

 

Eagle Projects: 

n        Chris Kuehn, Alex Bryan, James Lindloff – all did a great job at the Eagle Review.  The other district representative also gave praise about the good jobs they did.

n        This Thursday there will also be a Eagle board of review for Henry Puskala at Mahtomedi city hall at 6:50.

n        Wyeth suggested a GoodTurn.org as a possible web site for suggestions for next set of eagle projects that the troop may have.

 

Venture Crew 75 is going to venture crew in WI.
