TROOP COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES

November 8, 2004

Note: action items are underlined

Present:  Dennis Lindike, Kelvin Vartti, Steve Wiberg, Paul Evenson,  Jim Greene, Linda Christensen, Paul Hoff, Mike Checky, Tom Dosland,  Dick Bartlett.

 

n       PLC Report:  Nick Lindike reported that the theme is First Aid.  Will be doing Tenderfoot, Second Class and First Class questions.  Question from scout book will be asked about first aid before the scouts are admitted to the meeting.

n       11/15 – Bullheads flags.  Steve and Dennis will assist with questions. 

n       11/22 – Eagles flags,  Kelvin and Jim will assist with questions.   All of first class requirements for first aid. 

n       11/29    Realistic first aid training.  Need tarps on the washable floors. 

 

n        Roundtable Report:   (Steve, Dennis, Mike)

o         Breakout – Mitch did a camping breakout.  Council did a fireside chat where they talked about the Indianhead / Viking merger.  Both councils are suffering from lack of scouts, so they are thinking about merging to cut down on the overhead of costs and move more money into services.  Both councils voted on moving forward and they may merge by 2005, but there are more obstacles yet.  Local feedback meeting on 11/30 at First Lutheran church in WBL, 7->9:30 pm.   For more information see http://www.taskforce.realscouting.org/.

o         Steve worked on a rank advancement…

o         They about the need to recruiting new scouts.

o         Need to make a Note Den Chiefs are needed for the Packs

 

Newsletter

o         Next newsletter will be in December.

 

December / January Good Turn

·         Need to come up with a community Troop Good Turn for the Troop in December / January.

o         – Possibly adopt a highway…

o         – Could make Christmas decorations.

o         Linda will call the nursing home next to Freedom

Scoutmaster Report: 

 

Outings / Trip Reports:

n        Hiking merit badge – Excellent outing for the day.

n        Orienting – Kathryn Abbot had a short course with the young scouts last Saturday.  Meet the first class requirement.

n        Astronomy merit badge -  Was canceled again due to cloudy weather.  Dennis will keep trying.

n        Fred C. Anderson – Dec 11-12, Shelter C – Cost $50 to reserve the shelter -  plus $1.50 per person to cover taxes / insurance. 

·         Camping theme?? – Could be to work on Merit badges

·         Would there be a Hiking (Dick Shanke) high adventure chair may be available to come to the camping, but after further discussion this may be moved to the Dec troop meeting instead.

n        Future Outings – Possible a Cope outing at camp Philips in WI (~10 miles from Tomahawk) for the older scouts in place of Tomahawk.  Other possible outings include - High adventure outing out of Lake Superior,  Isle Royal, Porcupine Mountains, Boundary Waters, Canadian Trip, Medicine Mountain (SD).  (Could start a Venture Patrol, age 13 and above.  Mike C volunteered to assist).  Jim will look up information at camp Philips

n        Okpik  -- Feb 19-21.  Leave Friday morning – Check in on Friday Night.  Cost ~$90 per scout.  – Jim reserved for 12 people, 6 cabin stay, 6 on the tundra.  Jim will hand out Okpik information at an upcoming meeting.  (Two crews, one crew per six people).

n        January Outing:  There was some discussion about having a camping outing in January.  We could also use this outing as a merit badge outing.  Possibly could camp at Sterns camp at the Viking council, Pilipino is booked already.  Possible merit badges are communications, citizenship or personal management.

n        March Outing:  Junior Leader training outing.  (Scouts in leadership positions).

 

Pancake Breakfast:

n        Dec 5.  Jim / Steve usually run the pancake breakfast.  Mike suggested that they get a group of boys together to plan the breakfast to try to take ownership of the pancake breakfast.  Jim will get a group of younger scouts, Steve will ask for volunteers to meet with Jim after the next few troop meetings.

 

Treasurer’s Report:

 

FOS:  Goal this year is $3400->$3600.  Paul will plan on starting FOS in Dec.  

  

Advancement:

n        Carl completed the benches, he just need the final signoff from Murry.

n        Mike Schwarz is starting to get ideas on his project.

n        Could have a Life / Deep Start meeting after the regular scout meetings to determine if there are possible projects.  Steve noted that any Eagle paperwork needs to be signed by the scoutmaster in our council.

 

Eagle Projects: 

-- The last close up listed our latest eagles.

 

Troop Court of Honor: 

n        Dec 20 will be the next Troop Court of Honor.

New Business:   Paul E. will sponsor a shooting sports team (trap / skeet).
