Troop 433 Committee
Meeting
3/6/06
present: Scott Betlach, Mike Checky, Steve Frost,
Mary Hoff, Paul Hoff, Lee Hunt, Fred Koerschner, Steve Kuehn, Bob Leibel, Wyeth
Lewis, Dennis Lindeke, Rich Logan, Steve Wiberg, John Yarusso
PLC Report: Tony
West reported. Bridging ceremony needed in March or April. Rich Logan is
involved in picking date. Tentatively March 20,
March 13 will have a healthcare theme, including sobriety test preopening; talk by Pam Schwarz on fitness, drugs, and Scouting morals; fitness test for younger scouts; and a game. If March 20 isn’t bridging, will have Game Day with possible training session or do the new food pyramid with presentation by Jessie Lewis on healthy lifestyle, followed by health wrapup and game. Committee needs to reserve the gym.
Paul noted and Tony concurred that older scouts are frustrated by lack of respect from some of the younger scouts at meetings. Tony requested more parental involvement with the discipline. Mike noted that adults are supposed to hold off until leadership asks for help. Tony says he has asked. Rich suggested adults intermingle with scouts; Tony agreed that would help. Mike offered advice: use scout sign, wait. Wyeth pointed out adults are guilty of not respecting sign too. Discussion ensued on improving the setting. Wyeth suggested using a classroom instead of hallway for flag ceremony. Dennis said Kohler Hall is not an option this year. Fred suggested asking Steve Lindlof (charter organization rep) to take the lead on finding a better location. John suggested inviting Melissa Curtis (head custodian) to next meeting so she can get a sense for facility needs. Steve W. suggested for time being, use flip chart with troop meeting plan to help with structure.Wyeth suggested having scouts line up in patrols and holding patrol leaders accountable for order. Fred volunteered to talk to Steve Lindlof about improving arrangements.
Minutes: Passed unanimously
Roundtable Report (Fred): District dinner 4/27 (includes recognition) Scott will notify scouts who should be there (new Eagles, etc). Vote unanimous to pay the way for 2005 Eagle scouts.
District patch: will update for new council.
5/4 roundtable cooking demo; Fred will plug at next troop meeting. OA spring fling April 21-23; Andy Tessier is entertainment chair. Open to all scouts.
District FOS is at 70% of goal, 433 is at 150%. Paul will do next year (training 10/27) with Tom Dosland. Rich said the pack is at 60% of base.
The boy scout breakout was very good, about boards of review. Handout. Good things: descriptions for scout leadership positions. (Mike has been handing out here.) Fred may be getting samples, will distribute. Gave handout to Bob. Ideally ASMs are apparently not supposed to participate in Boards of Review, although 433 has allowed this in the interests of timely and meaningful rank advancement. Bob handed out Kelvin’s training for adults on board of review. Need to schedule a training session or boards of review. Steve W. suggested three adult training sessions per year for all adult training. Wyeth: this underscores why it’s important to register as committee members, not all ASMs. Steve says 433’s an example of how BORs should be conducted. Discussion about SM conference and BOR, not rubber stamping. We currently have 11 committee members, 14 ASMs per Dennis. Wyeth would like more to come in as committee members because training is less. Wyeth and Fred will work on putting a training session together shortly after bridging.
Tomahawk reservation policy may be changing from reserve when you leave to reserve in May of the preceding year (would start May 2007 for 2008). If you don’t like this, e-mail the district. Lee will contact the council to see when we need to reserve for 2007. Mike pointed out may want to go to Manypoint instead in 2007. Lee suggested getting a small group together to figure it out.. Lee offered to come to PLC to see if scouts are interested in helping figure out 2007 options.
Schutzenfest, now called Trailblazers, is Easter weekend, April 14-15. Lee will reserve a cabin for Friday night if there’s interest in going for Saturday only, and will send out an e-mail notice. $15 per scout. Ripley Rendezvous not going to work this year for us.
Scouting for Food: Ben Logan will help lead for our troop. Spring Camporee – conflicts with pancake breakfast.Valleyfair Day, 5/20—We’re inviting the Webelos to camp with us.
High Adventure:
Steve W sent out an e-mail about Philmont, Northern Tier, Apostles,
Outing: April 1 Eagle Patrol going climbing at Vertical Endeavors to earn climbing badge.
Scout Account Policy: John Yarusso presented policy. Incorporated suggestions from comment period. One was to allow cub scout accounts to be carried forward from pack into troop account. A second clarified that the accounts manager would be designated as the assistant treasurer. Wyeth objected to a provision dealing with returning funds to a hypothetical 18-yr old Eagle who may not have used up his funds before turning 18. The policy was approved and committee thanked John for his work.
Parent Guide: Lee is drafting a guide for new parents as to how the troop runs, as part of a subcommittee’s work. Will discuss in detail at April TC meeting.
Treasurer: Steve Lindlof is only authorized signatory on checking acct. Committee passed a motion to allow the troop chairman to also sign checks.
Pancake Breakfast: Kyle Yarusso is leading for the scouts, Fred is chair. Bob asked for an assistant as raffle coordinator. Committee members will try to find an adult helper.
Advancement update: Eagle projects: Steve W is coaching two boys. Luke Schulte and Jack Stangl are nominees for Gray Wolf (formerly JLTC; one more may be added. Ben Logan and Isak Vartti are on staff. Bob L recommended boys take advantage of the Northeast Y scout swimmingprogram , $9 a person, 2nd and 1st class rank swimming requirements, Swimming Merit Badge, or Lifesaving badge.
OA: Seven scouts and one adult were elected at recent troop meeting. These will be called out at Tomahawk, or at a court of honor.
Training: Troop committee challenge training is two-hour training for running committees in a role-play game format. Can be scheduled as needed. Manitou District training will be April 8 at WB First Lutheran, 8:00 a.m. (not at St. Jude’s as previously announced). TC challenge would be part of this event. Wyeth will check on Pat Johnston’s availability for April 4, or 10, or May 1, or 8. The troop agreedto nominate and pay for several boys to attend Jr. Leader College. Steve W will nominate candidates.
