TROOP COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES

February 7, 2005

Present:  Dennis Lindeke, Scott Betlach, Kelvin Vartti, Steve Wiberg, Jim Greene, Paul Hoff, Fred Kursher, Steve Kuhn, Steve Lindloff, Bob Libel, Mike Checky, Dick Bartlett, Wyeth Lewis, Rich Logan

 

·   PLC Report:   Bryan Greene reported that the next troop meetings will have a high adventure theme.

o        2/14 Meeting

§         Pre-opening – Auto safety by Steve W.

§         OA cards will be explained and handed out (SPL should invite OA members).

§         Pancake breakfast will be discussed by Brad B.

§         Patrol Meetings – high adventure discussions.

o        2/28 Meeting

§         Uniform inspection.

§         Patrol and Troop elections.

§         Inter-patrol activity (capture the flag or alternative) or gym use.

§         OA elections.

 

n       Roundtable Report :

o        Talked about FOS and the final FOS is due at the end of February. 

o        Pushing for camping at the end of next month, summer registrations are starting next month. 

o        Birch Bend handouts (Pinebend Company), has a camp in Morrison County where scouts can camp for free.  (Mike Stanton had attended this camp in the past and said that it was a good deal).

o        JLTC is now National Youth Training (Training changed to more of a hands on training).

o        Wyeth scheduled a JLC (Junior Leader Collage) on April 9. 

o        Outdoor leader training dates 3/19 and 4/30 or 4/2 and 5/7 (check close-ups).  Scott B. will discuss these training opportunities at the end of an upcoming meeting.

o        Wyeth should audit the Troops Leader training to see what training is needed for the leaders.

 

Newsletter / Calendar

o        The next Newsletter should go out in March.  This should include new dates for Spring Outings (Shoot-n-Fest, White-Water Rafting) and Training.  – (Look to see if a Boy Scout scribe could contribute to a newsletter, currently Nathan Kurshner is the scribe).

 

Good Turn

o        The Ramsey county forester will call to tell the best date to clean out the wood duck houses.  -- The Troop assumed a yearly service project to clean out the 12 wood duck houses that were installed as part of Alex Bryant’s eagle project last year.

Scoutmaster Report: 

 

Outings / Trip Reports:

·         February 5:  Klondike Derby – One Boy scout from the troop attended.  ~140 people in total.  Went well overall.

·         Okpik -- Feb 19-21.  Leave Friday morning – Check in on Friday Night.  Cost ~$90 per scout.

o        9 scouts, 5 adults for tundra

o        5 scouts, 2 adults for cabin stays.

o        Next Monday, the crew leaders need to be picked.

o        Meet at 9 am, Leave ~10 am from St Jude Ark parking lot.

o        High Adventure Health forms needed with copy of the insurance cards.

o        Kyle will make up a reminder with what to bring. 

o        Planning on eating in Ely on Friday night.

·         Ski Outing:  Trollhaugen for the ski merit badge / scout outing on 2/6 -- 16 scouts went – with four working on the merit badge. 

·         Shoot and Fest – Need to sign up for this weekend.  Usually in April.  Jim G. needs to supply a sign up sheet for this outing

·         White Water rafting – June 4, camp out at the Wiberg’s cabin Friday and Raft on Saturday.

·         Tomahawk cleanup weekends.  We need to pick a weekend.

·         Tomahawk camping. 

o        Jim G. will need to supply an additional $25 per scout deposit for returning scouts.  This is due in March.

o        Bullheads are doing a boundary waters outing instead of Tomahawk this year.

Treasurer’s Report:

o        The Treasurer says, “Our bank account looks good.”

o        Thanks to Dennis L. who wrote a letter to the Lions asking for donations to assist our JLTC training costs.  They agreed to donated $500 to the troop to help pay for the training.

 

FOS:  We passed the stretch goal of $3600, with $3800 in pledges plus $1200 in company matches.  There was a good response with sending out the FOS forms with the December newsletter along with the stamped return envelope.  There are just a few outstanding FOS forms.

 

Re-Chartering:

Turned in on Monday, 37 scouts and 23 adults were re-charted, costing $803.60

 

Advancement:

n       District Merit Badge Fair – Feb 26, 8 am -> 3 pm at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 171 Elm Street, Lino Lakes.  The troop should plan on having a better turnout this year.  We need to get this information to the scouts so they can sing up early to get an opportunity to attend the merit badges that fill up quickly.  We need to get this information out to the scouts as the merit badge sessions fill up fast.

 

Eagle Projects: 

n       Cark Betlach talked about his progress towards Eagle.  Finishing up Merit badges, he needs letters of recommendation.  Scout office call the committee chair and schedules a scoutmaster conference.

n       Eagle Scout plaque update:

·         A previous Eagle owns Lakeville trophy will make a plaque for $100, with room for 40 or 60 names on the plaque.  We currently have 39 past eagles in the history of the Troop.  Steve K. will get photos of plaques that were previously made by Lakeville Trophy to show the committee.

 

Deep Star Meeting: 

n       Set up a meeting for March 14 after a Troop Meeting.

·         Could possible have a cooking theme, where the kids could plan a cookout / and have a cooking contest.  (Could try out some summer menu plans).

 

PLC Planning: 

·         After the new SPL is elected at the end of February the current SPL is assumed to shadow / help out to assist a smooth transition.  The committee approved that the troop would cover the cost for a pizza party for the March PLC meeting.

 

Training (from Dec minutes):  Dennis will draft a letter to present to the Lions club.  Thanks to Dennis because the Lions donated $500 to the pay for this.

 

Webelo’s Transition:

Crossover dates on 3/13 or 3/20, on Sunday afternoon at Kathryn Abbot Park.  Trooped picked 3/20 for the Boy Scout crossover.    Coordinate with Rich Logan.
