TROOP 433 NEWS

FOR SCOUTS AND PARENTS

June 2007

 

Tomahawk

Tomahawk 2006 is Aug 5-12 with a planning meeting on July 15 & 29 @ 6:00pm at St. Jude’s Ark.  All scouts attending Tomahawk and a parent must be present at the July planning meeting. 

n      Final Payment will be due on July 29 meeting before we leave for Tomahawk.

n      The cost will be $225.

n      All scouts and adults must have current health forms to attend Tomahawk – Contact Pam Schwartz (779-8701) for information on health forms, or download the Youth Health form from

n      Each scout needs to bring their own mess kit (bowls / plates, utensils, cups) and a mesh bag to hang their kits after washing them.

n       See the attached recommended equipment to bring to Tomahawk.  (From page 8 from http://www.camptomahawk.org/files/LeaderManual.pdf )

n      Included in your Tomahawk payment is a new class B T-Shirt that was ordered with your Tomahawk deposit.

n      Each scout also needs to review the Tomahawk Bear Training Manual.  An online copy is available to view at: http://www.camptomahawk.org/files/BearManual.pdf

n      We are looking for a scout quartermaster to assist Jesse Lewis this year at Tomahawk.  Jesse worked very hard last year in prep for Tomahawk and needs an assistant to learn the duties for next year.  Please contact Mr. Wiberg or any of the adult leaders if interested.

n      Early BSA swim tests will be given at the White Bear Lake YMCA on Sunday July 15 @ 3:30pm.  Cost will be $3. 

 

Tomahawk Merit Badges:

All scouts attending Tomahawk need to pre-register their Merit badge selections with Lee Hunt by the July 15 planning meeting.  Also note the t-shirt size on the when registering the Merit badges.  Attached is a list of Merit Badges available at Tomahawk.    (Printed from page 4->7 of http://www.camptomahawk.org/files/SiouxLeaderGuide.pdf )

n      First year Scouts are required to attend BrownSea training plus two merit badges – It is suggested that the first year scouts pick from Mammals, Basketry, Leatherwork or Wood Carving.  The minimum costs are $20-$25 for Basketry, $6 for Leatherwork, $5 for Wood Carving. 

n      All other scouts attending Tomahawk need to pre-register their Merit badge selections based on the attached list, to Lee Hunt and Rich Logan by the 7/15 planning meeting .  Please email Mr. Hunt leeghunt@comcast.net and Mr. Logan rich_logan@symantec.com  with your merit badge selections.

n      Dennis Lindeke will offer the first part of Environmental Science at his home with the remainder of the badge to be completed at Tomahawk.  Scouts must call and leave Dennis a message to schedule a meeting 

 

Troop Patrol Outings

The troop encourages each patrol to plan and participate in patrol outings.  The outings can be quick day outings to planed camping events.  To encourage outings the Troop will reimburse scout patrols for one overnight outing to encourage boy run leadership and planning.  The Troop will reimburse up to $20 per scout when at least 2/3’s of the patrol participates or up to $30 per scout when 100% of the patrol participates.  The patrol outing Reimbursement Policy and Form can be found on the Troop 433 forms web page at:  http://www.mahtomedi433.org/troop/forms.html

Summer Merit Badges: 

Take advantage of the summer Merit badge dates. Scouts should contact the Merit badge counselor at least 3 days in advance by phone

  • Scouts interested in Personal Fitness Merit badge should give Pam Schwarz a call or email at rmspcs@comcast.net
  • Scouts interested in Family Life should give Mary Hoff a call.  If there is interest in this merit badge, Mary will set up some dates for meetings.
  • Scouts interested in “Fish and Wildlife”, Fishing, Lifesaving, Nature, Swimming or Water Skiing should contact Bob Leibel if you’re interested.
  • Scouts working on Backpacking Merit Badge with Scott Betlach - As a group, please schedule at least one more weekend trip and submit requirement 11 c as outlined below.
  • Scouts interested in Citizenship in the World and Citizenship in the Nation sometime this summer can contact Paul Hoff.
  • Scouts interested in Canoeing Merit Badge this summer can contact Paul Hoff and Dave Puskala
  • Scouts working on the Auto Mechanics Merit Badge should meet at Steve Wiberg house on Saturday July 7th at 9:00am and then going over to local repair-speed shop.  Returning around 1:00pm.
  • Scouts working on or interested in the Personal Management Merit Badge this summer should call Dick Bartlett by calling his cell phone at 651-295-9953 or sending me an email to b2pears@comcast.net.
